Warning: This post reveals a controversial secret that your school teachers didn’t want you to discover.
Has anyone ever told you that you are “weird”?
How did it make you feel? Did you feel bad about it?
Did you quickly try to defend yourself and prove you are not “weird”?
Let me first tell you one thing…
If anyone has ever called you “weird” or even “crazy”, then…
You are…
Marvelous!
Yes, I heartily congratulate you.
Because the secret that no one ever tells us is, being very different and “weird” is an absolutely wonderful thing.
Here’s why…
As long as I remember, when my mom got angry with “weird” things I did (which happened very often
), she always kept telling me…
“Ladan! Why do you have to be so stubborn and different? Why can’t you be just like normal kids around you? Why do you keep doing crazy things that no one else does? Why?!”
At that time, being a kid, I didn’t have any answer to that, but yet kept doing what I thought was right.
And I admit I was REALLY weird…
When everyone at my age was leading a “normal” life, getting good scores at school, trying to be a good, humble girl, learning to cook and hope to find a nice man to get married and have kids, and so on…
… But what was I doing?
I was starting a business no one had ever heard of it in my country (Internet marketing), publishing a newsletter online with thousands of subscribers from all over the world, planing about traveling around the world, attending international teleseminars as a guest speaker, and so much more.
And trust me, this is just the tip of the iceberg.
So yes, you could say my mom was right. I was really weird after all. But there was one thing that she didn’t know…
Years later, I finally discovered a forbidden fact…
–> It is GREAT to be weird!
Because it means you are so different from the crowd that you stand out totally - just like the red flower in the picture above.
Now this is the type of secret that they don’t tell you in school. Teachers just want you to be a “good boy/girl” and do what they say…
But the fact is, “average” people who were “normal”, never made any big achievements in history. BIG people whose names we’ll always remember, were those who dared to be Different and Weird.
Those who were called “crazy” by not just a few… but thousands or even millions of people!
So eversince I realized this, every time my mom said the same thing (which still happens often
), I’d proudly say…
“Mom, of course I am different! Of course I do things that no one else does. And I am proud of it. I’d rather be dead than live a normal, average life.”
After all, have you noticed that BIG people in history have mostly been called “weird” or even crazy during their life… and we just discovered how great they were later on… sometimes even after their death?
what do you think people thought about Edison in his time when he was trying to make the lamp work 100 times?
Do you think they thought Edison was “normal” by any chance?
*** So Why Is IT So Important to Know Being Weird Is Great? ***
Because you know that how people think about us usually has a big influence over what we do, or not do.
How many times has it happened to you that you liked to do something, but didn’t because you were afraid people would dislike you or make fun of you?
So if we actually think it is bad thing if someone says we are crazy, we’d certainly stop doing things that are daring and bold.
But if we know it’s actually great to have others call us “different”, then we are free to do anything! It is so liberating. You’ll see.
Just imagine you can do whatever you want and every comment people make that how weird you are, is like the sweetest compliment.
Then you’d tell them…
“Oh really? Thank you! That’s very sweet of you to think in such high regards about me that I am unique and different from the rest of the crowd.” (Expect to receive some “interesting” looks from the person at this time
![]()
So the next time someone tells you he thinks you are “weird”, you know what to proudly say.
And hey, we can even create our own brand of T-shirts saying: “I am Weird… and Proud of it!” or “Weird Rocks.”
“Eagles don’t flock. You always have to find them one at a time.”

I like being out of the zone, because it takes some madness to become a genius
Just to give you hope about the state of schools :). I taught for two years in a junior high where part of our mission was to educate our students to be self-determinate.
The following was our mission statement. Even though I don’t teach there anymore, it still speaks to me.
Hope you enjoy!

We think ‘weird’ is a test of fitness Laden.
If a ‘weirdo’ can follow through then all is fine.
Sort of a survival-of-the-species social reflex?
You write well - great item!
Great Post Ladan,
It is easy to give up and not go forward with a personal passion, when everyone around you thinks you are crazy, weird, lazy, poorly motivated etc. I feel the most crucial issue is believing in yourself despite lack of support from colleagues, loved ones, family, and friends. Many of us have heard “why can’t you be like others” or “why don’t you just get a regular job”.
When you are passionate for something you know in your heart you are doing the right thing even when others around you are not supportive.
I will take weird any day…………….
Wholesome
Electrifying
Individualistic
Responsible
Decisive
Yes I’m weird, thank you, thank you very much.
It’s great to be weird.Civilization and progress of the world depends on the weird ones. What a marvelous up Ladan!

Hi Dirk,
Yes, good point. We need to be out of the zone to see things in a new light, to come up with innovative ideas… and to create things.
Hi Melanie,
Thanks for sharing about the status of schools. It’s wonderful to see your school is educating students about these important values. Hope more schools start to do the same.
Hi John,
Thank you for sharing what you think.
Wyrd? I checked it, interesting meaning. Based on WikiPedia, here’s what the concept means…
“In a simple sense, Wyrd refers to how past actions continually affect and condition the future, but also how the future affects the past. The concept of Wyrd highlights the interconnected nature of all actions and how they influence each other.”
Hi Curtis,
You mentioned a great point. I can excatly related to you. We have heard the common words of “why can’t you be like others” so many times, right?
But who has gotten anywhere in life doing what other average people do? Being average was never nobel or profitable, anyway.
So yes, I agree… I will take weird any day.
Hi Adedeji,
Thanks for dropping by. Good to see you on this blog as well.
“progress of the world depends on the weird ones”
Awesome point!
Hi Suwandi,
Thank you for sharing your opinion here.
So you’re from Indonesia? You have a wonderful country. I’ve just been to Jakarta and Bali a couple of months ago. Interesting places, lovely people.
Ladan
I’ve always been weird and I loved being weird. It meant I was not your everyday ear of corn . . . That is one thing I have against communism - the stifling of individuality.
Great post Ladan. Thank you.
Hi Ladan,
Its great to be weird and I know I am weird.
Great post Laden! It is inspiring.
Keep it up.

Being WEIRD is fine (take care in some regions though).
But, ‘applying’ weird (or ‘normal’) as a CHOICE is best.
However, this IDEA may seem a little wyrd?
Oh dear!
=/
Dear Ladan,
Thank you for the permission to be weird. I have always been different too.
Now I see that it is a blessing, not a problem. Thanks for your insight.
